Upgrading your BMW G20 with paddle shifters is an exciting project, but if your vehicle isn’t prewired, the process can seem daunting. At Motorsport Werk, we specialize in BMW retrofits and have created a clear guide to help you achieve this upgrade seamlessly.

In this guide, we’ll outline the steps for retrofitting paddle shifters, discuss the tools and parts required, and explain how our custom retrofit cables and optional coding services can simplify the process.

Preparation: What You’ll Need

Parts and Services

  • Retrofit cable (available at our Store Page here).
  • VO coding to include 2TB (Sport Automatic Transmission).

Tools

  • Trim removal tools.
  • Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips).
  • 8mm socket wrench.
  • Torque wrench.

Safety Note

Always disconnect the battery before beginning to avoid electrical damage or airbag deployment risks.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Access the BDC Module

The Body Domain Controller (BDC) is in the passenger footwell. Follow these steps to access it:

  1. Remove the door sill trim and the cover near the bottom-right corner of the door frame.
  2. Locate the BDC connector and insert the retrofit cable pin into Pin 5.

2. Access the SLZ Module

To connect the cable to the Steering Column Module (SLZ):

  1. Remove the steering wheel and SLZ cover.
  2. Insert the cable pin into Pin 3 of the SLZ connector.

3. Route the Cable

Carefully route the cable from the SLZ to the BDC, ensuring proper cable management to avoid interference with moving parts.

4. Reassembly

Reconnect all components and ensure proper alignment. Reattach the steering wheel and torque it to the specified value.

5. Coding

Update the Vehicle Order (VO) to include 2TB using tools like Esys. If you need assistance, Motorsport Werk offers remote coding services.
